Hong Kong Import Growth Slows in July

Imports to Hong Kong rose 41% year-on-year to USD 677.4 billion in July 2026, easing from a 45.4% increase in June.

Growth was broad-based across major commodity categories, led by electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof (47.1%), office machines and automatic data-processing machines (78.9%), and non-ferrous metals (242.5%).

By source, imports increased most from South Korea (146.6%) and India (110.7%), followed by the UK (106.3%), Malaysia (66.7%), the US (62.6%) and Mainland China (37.1%).

In the first seven months of 2026, imports rose 40.6% year-on-year, driven by electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof (47%), telecommunications and sound-recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (62.2%), and non-ferrous metals (205.2%).

Imports to Hong Kong rose 60% year-on-year to USD 739.1 billion in August 2026, accelerating from a 41% increase in July. The latest figure marked the largest import growth since August 1968, driven largely by increased purchases in electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances, and electrical parts thereof (+64.5%), office machines and automatic data processing machines (+61.4%), and telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (+50.4%). By source, imports recorded the strongest growth among major suppliers from Korea (+265.8%), the United Kingdom (+111.6%), India (+107.7%), Malaysia (+78.7%), Vietnam (+67.2%) and the Mainland (+54.1%). For the first eight months of 2026, imports grew 43.2% compared to the same period a year earlier.

Imports to Hong Kong rose 45.5% year-on-year to USD 693 billion in June 2026, following a 42% rise in the previous month. The latest figure marked the largest import growth since February 1992, driven largely by increased purchases in electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances, and electrical parts thereof (+54.2%), telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (+67.3%), and office machines and automatic data processing machines (+53.6%). By source, imports recorded the strongest growth among major suppliers from Korea (+176.7%), Vietnam (+106.8%), India (+95.4%), Malaysia (+62.4%), and Mainland China (+41.0%). For the first half of 2026, imports grew 40.6% compared to the same period a year earlier, lifted by higher inflows of non-ferrous metals (+197.8%), telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment (+71.5%), and electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances, and electrical parts thereof (+47.0%).
