French Consumer Morale Worsens in May

France’s consumer confidence fell to 88 in May 2025 from a downwardly revised 91 in April, missing forecasts of an improvement to 93.
The index moved further below its long-term average of 100 and marked the weakest reading since December.
Sentiment deteriorated regarding expected financial situations (-14 vs -11) and future living standards (-59 vs -54), with the latter hitting its lowest level since April 2023.
Households were also less inclined to make major purchases (-27 vs -23), and expectations for saving capacity slipped (10 vs 11).
At the same time, concerns about unemployment jumped sharply (61 vs 52), reaching its highest level since May 2015, while inflation expectations also increased (-38 vs -37).
