Baltic Dry Index Rises for 2nd Day, Still Posts Weekly Loss

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, advanced for a second session on Friday, rising by 1.8% to 2,841 points, driven by gains across all vessel segments.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also gained for a second day, climbing by 2.8% to 4,552 points; and the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, snapped a seven-day losing streak, up 0.7% to 2,108 points.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index rose to fresh July highs.

The benchmark index recorded a weekly decline of 0.8%.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, snapped a two-day losing streak on Thursday, rising about 0.5% to 2,791 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, increased by 1.2% to 4,429 points; and the supramax index went up 0.2% to a fresh high since July 28 at 1,637 points. By contrast, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 1% to a new low since July 31 at 2,088 points.

Baltic Dry Index Down for 2nd Day
The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, retreated for a second session on Wednesday, falling about 1.4% to a fresh low since July 31 at 2,776 points. Larger declines in the bigger-size segments outweighed a mild increase in the smallest one. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, was also down for a second day, dropping by 1% to a new low since July 31 at 4,376 points; and the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, declined by 2.2% to its lowest since July 31 at 2,107 points. On the other hand, the supramax index rose by 0.2% to a fresh high since July 28 at 1,634 points.
