The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, snapped a two-day losing streak on Thursday, rising about 0.5% to 2,791 points.
The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, increased by 1.2% to 4,429 points; and the supramax index went up 0.2% to a fresh high since July 28 at 1,637 points.
By contrast, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 1% to a new low since July 31 at 2,088 points.
