The ANZ-Indeed Australian Job Ads rose by 0.3% month-over-month in December 2024, swinging from a revised 1.8% decline in the previous month.
The latest figure suggested the labor market remained resilient amid elevated interest rates.
During the final month of the year, hiring activity typically grinds to a halt, but there were some sectors, such as childcare, construction, and some healthcare professions, where hiring ramped up.
Christmas-exposed sectors, such as retail and food services, also held up surprisingly well in December.
"While we do not foresee a sharp downswing in job adds in 2025, we do expect some softening in employment growth and a modest lift in the unemployment rate to 4.3%," ANZ Economist, Madeline Dunk said.
On an annual basis, ads dipped 12.5% from the prior year.
They have decreased 27.8% from their peak in 2022 but remain 14.7% higher than pre-pandemic levels.
For the quarter, job ads increased by 0.5%, marking the first quarterly rise since Q3 of 2022.
