Australia Building Permits Fall More than Expected

The seasonally adjusted number of total dwellings approved in Australia fell 6.4% month-on-month to 15,832 units in October 2025, reversing a downwardly revised 11.1% surge in September, according to preliminary estimates.
The latest reading was worse than market forecasts of a 4.5% decline, with approvals for private-sector dwellings excluding houses plunging 13.1%, reversing a downwardly revised 25.0% jump in the previous month, while private-sector house approvals shrank 2.1% following a downwardly revised 3.2% rise.
By state, approvals decreased in Victoria (-24.7%) and New South Wales (-20.6%), while Western Australia (28.1%), South Australia (11.2%), and Queensland (2.4%) recorded increases.
On a yearly basis, total dwelling approvals declined 1.8%, after a downwardly revised 14.9% surge in the previous month.
