Australia's trade surplus on goods widened to AUD 6.90 billion in March 2025, up from a downwardly revised AUD 2.85 billion in the previous month, and well above market expectations of AUD 3.90 billion.
It was the largest trade surplus since February 2024, as exports surged while imports fell.
Shipments jumped 7.6% from the previous month to a 14-month high of AUD 45.35 billion, following an upwardly revised 4.2% decline in February.
The rise was largely driven by non-rural goods, with exports to Australia's top trading partners, China, and the US rebounding.
Australia is among the US trade partners currently trying to negotiate with Washington over its new tariffs on imports.
US President Donald Trump indicated he intends to speak with the Australian Prime Minister about the issue.
Meanwhile, imports dropped 2.2% to AUD 38.45 billion, reversing an upwardly revised 1.8% rise in the previous month, mainly due to a decline in capital goods.
