Sweden Industrial Output Falls for 1st Time in 15 Months

Industrial production in Sweden fell by 1.5% year-on-year in June 2026, slipping from an upwardly revised and eight-month high of a 7.6% growth in the previous month. The latest figure marked the first contraction since March 2025, largely driven by a sharp decline in mining production, down 13.8% after an 8.5% rise in May. Activity also decreased in the manufacturing sector (-1% vs 7.6%), reflecting weaker output for coke and refined petroleum products (-3.6% vs -5.7%), rubber and plastic products (-4.4% vs 3.6%), and basic metals (-3.8% vs -3.2%), which more than offset increases for textiles, clothing, and leather (3.5% vs 6.3%) and other non-metallic mineral products (7.3% vs 11.1%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output fell by 0.4%, following an upwardly revised 0.6% gain in the preceding period.

Industrial production in Sweden rose by 6.9% year-on-year in May 2026, matching April’s revised growth rate and remaining the strongest expansion since September 2025. Manufacturing growth held steady at 7.0%, supported by higher production of chemicals, chemical products and pharmaceutical products (14.4% vs 12.5% in April), electrical equipment (3.4% vs 1.7%), and a sharp rebound in computer, electronic and optical products (11.1% vs -2.3%), which more than offset a decline in coke and refined petroleum products (-5.6% vs 10.0%) and slower growth in transport equipment (4.3% vs 9.9%). Additionally, mining production increased by 9.1%, accelerating from a 1.6% gain in the previous month. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output edged up by 0.2% in May, easing from a 4.2% rise a month earlier.

Industrial production in Sweden grew by 7.1% year-on-year in April 2026, accelerating from an upwardly revised 3.4% rise in the previous month. This marked the strongest growth in industrial activity since last September, driven largely by a rebound in mining output, which rose 2.3% after falling 6.4% in March, as metal ore mining returned to growth (0.6% vs -7.2%), while contractions in other mining and quarrying activities eased (-1.1% vs -1.2%). Additionally, manufacturing production climbed by 7.2% (vs 3.8%), marking its fastest rise in seven months, supported mainly by higher output for coke and refined petroleum products (18.9% vs 19.4%), chemical and pharmaceutical products (12.6% vs 20.8%), and other non-metallic mineral products (8.9% vs 1.9%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output rose by 4.2% in April, rebounding from a downwardly revised 1.6% drop in the preceding period.
