The SENSEX Index Closes 0.09% Higher

India’s BSE Sensex closed about 0.2% up at 78,581 on Wednesday, recovering from yesterday's losses, as markets evaluated the latest central bank policy decision, corporate earnings, and Middle East developments. Sentiment remained cautious, however, amid rising crude oil prices, foreign fund outflows, and the new closing auction mechanism. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 5.25% and maintained its neutral policy stance, broadly in line with market expectations. Investors also welcomed signs of progress toward a US-Iran agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, although fresh incidents in the Red Sea kept geopolitical risks elevated. UltraTech Cement led gains among stocks, rising 2%, followed by NTPC (+1.8%), SBIN (+1.7%), and M&M (+1.7%). Bharti Airtel added 0.3% after reporting a strong June quarter. On the flip side, TCS (-1.2%), HCL Tech (-1.1%), Reliance (-0.9%) and BEL (-0.7%) posted the biggest losses.

The SENSEX Index gained 73 points or 0.09 percent on Wednesday to close at 78502 points. Gains were led by Larsen & Toubro (1.43%), NTPC (1.32%) and UltraTech Cement (1.16%). Biggest losers were HCL Tech (-2.18%), Tata Consultancy (-1.86%) and Bajaj Finserv (-1.19%).

Market participants, however, remained attentive to the impact of India's recently introduced closing auction mechanism for derivative-linked stocks, which has contributed to heightened volatility in benchmark index movements near the close of trading. Among notable movers included NIACL (8.8%), Morepen (7.1%), Bluestone (4.9%), and Deepak (2.9%). Looking ahead, markets will focus on the RBI's policy decision, along with crude oil prices, inflation, and monsoon progress, for cues on the outlook for the Indian economy and equities.
