Honduras Slashes Interest Rates
The Central Bank of Honduras trimmed its benchmark interest rate by 75 bps to 3.75 percent at its August meeting, with the purpose of mitigating the effects of the pandemic on economic activity and employment. The bank noted that inflation is expected to remain close to the lower limit of the target range (4.00 percent ± 1.00 percent) for 2020.
Honduras Holds Interest Rate at 4.50%
The Central Bank of Honduras left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.50 percent at its June meeting. Policymakers noted that the IMF recently revised downwardly its GDP growth forecasts for the region.. They also mentioned that domestic activity contracted 6.6% in the first four months of the year. The Committee said that the inflation rate is expected to slow mainly due to a fall in cost of fuel. The annual inflation rate dropped to 2.3% in May from 3.3% in April, standing well below the mid-point of the target range (4% +/- 1%), mostly due to transport and housing & utilities. Policymakers reaffirmed their commitment to monitor periodically main economic variables and will adopt measures to maintain low and stable inflation if necessary.
