Wheat Futures Hit 1-Month High

2026-08-26 03:53 By Czyrill Jean Coloma 1 min. read

Wheat futures climbed toward $7 per bushel in late August, reaching their highest level since July 23, as intensifying Russia-Ukraine attacks threatened to further disrupt grain shipments from the Black Sea.

The worsening conflict has raised concerns over the ability of the two major wheat exporters to move their crops to global markets, particularly as the new harvest gathers pace.

Russia is expected to ship 46 million metric tons of wheat in the current marketing year, while Ukraine is projected to export 13.5 million tons, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Adding to upward pressure on prices, US wheat export inspections fell to 425,668 metric tons in the week ended August 20, from 514,363 tons a week earlier and well below the 1.05 million tons inspected during the same week last year.

Meanwhile, the US spring wheat harvest was advancing rapidly, with 62% of the crop in the bin as of Sunday, compared with 41% a week earlier and above the five-year average of 52%.

Wheat Rises to Over 3-Week High
Wheat climbed to over $6.80 per bushel, moving toward the two-year high of $7.08 reached on July 22, as renewed concerns over Black Sea export disruptions supported the market. Continued Russian and Ukrainian attacks on shipping severely disrupted regional grain flows, with Ukraine’s agricultural exports falling sharply during the first half of August. Traders are increasingly concerned that prolonged restrictions on Black Sea ports could significantly reduce Ukrainian wheat shipments during the 2026/27 season. Ukraine’s wheat exports could fall to between 5 million and 10 million metric tons if attacks continue to restrict access to key ports. Wheat has also benefited from firmer soybean and corn prices, while ongoing geopolitical tensions are keeping global supply risks in focus. Although some traders have recently taken profits following the earlier rally, the disruption to Black Sea exports continues to provide an important floor for prices.
