Rice Futures at 2-Week Lows

2026-07-06 14:25 By Luisa Carvalho 1 min. read

Rice futures traded around $12.7 per hundredweight, their lowest in two-weeks, as supply fundamentals remained favorable despite weather-related risks.

While El Niño could disrupt upcoming harvests, elevated inventories and expectations of near-normal conditions in key producing regions are expected to cushion the impact.

Global rice stocks remain abundant after successive strong harvests, led by India.

World milled rice inventories reached a record 196.2 million tons at the start of 2026, while India's stocks climbed to an all-time high of 68.4 million tons in June.

The USDA expects India to export a record 25 million tonnes this year, with year-end stocks also projected to remain elevated.

Indonesia, a key rice importer, is also holding record stockpiles as farmers accelerate planting to reduce El Niño risks.

Meanwhile, stock levels in Thailand are at their highest in a decade, with fresh second-crop arrivals expected from late July.

El Niño Threat Lifts Rice Prices
Rice futures traded around $12.8 per hundredweight, close to the highest level since June 2025, driven by El Niño-related supply concerns. The weather event is expected to disrupt global agricultural production in the months ahead, with rice viewed as the most vulnerable crop. Forecasts suggest it will peak during the Northern Hemisphere winter and extend into early 2027, with Southeast Asia and parts of the Southern Hemisphere most at risk. Supporting this view, the International Grains Council (IGC) pegged 2026/27 global rice output at 545 million tons, unchanged from the previous month and slightly below last season’s record of 546 million. It warned that El Niño could pressure yields in major Asian producers, particularly Thailand. In India, weak monsoon rainfall has raised output concerns, though stocks remain ample. Government rice inventories hit a record 68.43 million tonnes as of June 1, well above buffer requirements.
