Platinum Falls to Over One-Week Low

2026-08-31 16:11 By Larissa Caser 1 min. read

Platinum futures traded below $1,850 per ounce, reaching a more than one-week low as near-term investment flows continue to influence prices despite stronger industrial demand.

Hawkish statements from Fed Chair Warsh and fresh strikes in the Middle East supported expectations of a Fed rate hike, weighing on the non-yielding metal.

Still, volatile fuel costs and tight supplies linked to the Middle East conflict are encouraging countries to reduce exposure to fossil-fuel price volatility, supporting demand for hybrid vehicles, which use autocatalysts.

Additionally, Hyundai's plans to introduce 10 new hybrid models in North America further supports demand for the metal.

The World Platinum Investment Council forecasts industrial demand to increase 9% in 2026, while emerging applications in hydrogen technologies, chips and AI data-centers could provide additional long-term demand.

The metal also remains supported by a persistent supply deficit, limiting available metal.

Platinum Slips From Three-Month High
Platinum futures traded around $1,860 per ounce, after reaching a three-month high as investment flows remain influential in the near term despite higher demand. Expectations of a Fed rate hike increased following the Fed's Chairman statement there was "work to do" in returning inflation to target, weighing on the non-yielding metal. Platinum Slips on Profit-Taking
Platinum futures fell below $1,840, reaching its lowest level in a week as inflation concerns cloud the demand for non-yielding commodities. US inflation remains above the Fed’s target, boosting expectations of a rate hike by year-end and weighing on demand for the non-yielding metal. Investors also took profits across the metals complex following the US Treasury’s announcement of increased buybacks of long-term government debt aimed at lowering elevated borrowing costs. On the industrial side, the Middle East conflict has encouraged countries to reduce their exposure to volatile fuel costs, strengthening the case for investment in cheaper, domestically produced renewable energy. Rising fuel prices are also supporting EV adoption, potentially reducing demand for platinum used in automotive catalysts. Still, platinum remained underpinned by a tight global supply-demand balance, with persistent supply deficits and low inventories limiting available metal.
