Gold Hits 6-Week Peak

2025-12-01 02:28 By Judith Sib-at 1 min. read

Gold prices climbed to around $4,240 per ounce on Monday, the highest level in six weeks, driven by rising expectations of a US interest rate cut next week.

A series of dovish remarks from Federal Reserve officials, along with weak economic data following the longest US government shutdown, have increased bets that the Fed may lower rates again.

Currently, markets are pricing in an 87% probability of a 25bps reduction.

Investors will be closely monitoring US private payrolls data and PCE figures, due this week, for further clues on the Fed’s policy direction.

Gold has posted gains in nearly every month this year, positioning it for its best annual performance since 1979.

The metal’s ascent has been supported by robust central-bank buying and strong ETF inflows.

Gold Climbs to Seven-Week High on Hopes of US-Iran Deal
Gold extended its gains to around $4,200 an ounce on Wednesday, reaching its highest level since June 18, as easing geopolitical tensions and softer US labor market data reinforced expectations of a less aggressive Federal Reserve. President Donald Trump said the US and Iran held "very good discussions" on Tuesday, raising hopes of a deal to end their five-month conflict. The prospect of restored Middle Eastern energy supplies has pushed oil prices down about 10% this week, easing inflation concerns and reducing expectations for further Fed tightening. Meanwhile, the ADP Employment Report showed the US economy added just 44,000 private-sector jobs in July, the weakest reading since January and well below forecasts of 70,000. Traders now see a 57% chance of a September Fed rate hike, down from 67% a day earlier. Still, Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid said some additional policy tightening may be needed to bring inflation back to the central bank's 2% target.

Gold Extends Gain as Hormuz Deal Eyed
Gold climbed toward $4,200 an ounce on Wednesday, rising for the third straight session as investors assessed reports of an imminent deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which could ease inflation concerns and lower the likelihood of near-term Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. On Tuesday, Qatar said an interim proposal had been prepared, while both Washington and Tehran signaled progress in negotiations to reopen Hormuz, triggering a sharp decline in oil prices. Markets trimmed expectations for a September Fed rate hike to around 57%, down from 67% a day earlier. Investors are now awaiting a fresh batch of US labor market data for further clues on the Fed’s policy outlook, with ADP’s July private payrolls report due later today. Meanwhile, gold-backed exchange-traded funds in China continued to attract inflows as institutional investors maintained support for bullion above the key $4,000-an-ounce level.
