Arabica coffee futures retreated to around $3.88 per pound, drifting further from a four-week high of nearly $4 per pound reached on October 14, on profit-booking and hopes of a possible revision of the 50% tariffs on Brazilian coffee.
Talks on steep import tariffs between Brazilian officials and the United States kicked off on October 16 in Washington, with both sides calling them positive and agreeing to schedule a meeting between their presidents "at the earliest possible occasion." Brazil continues negotiations for the exemption of taxation on the export of Brazilian coffee to the US.
Meanwhile, concerns about low exchange stocks and below-average rainfall in key producing regions in Brazil persisted, despite most analysts still expecting a good harvest next year.
ICE-monitored arabica inventories fell to a fresh 1.5-year low of 493,783 bags as of October 16.
