Baltic Dry Index Extends to Over 4-Month High

The Baltic Exchange dry bulk freight index climbed 1.7% to 2,567 on Friday, its highest level since December 8, extending gains for an eleventh consecutive session and posting a weekly rise of 16.6%.

The capesize index, which tracks vessels carrying around 150,000 tons of cargo such as iron ore and coal, jumped 2.5% to 4,128, a more than four month high.

The panamax index, typically used for 60,000 to 70,000 ton shipments of coal or grain, edged up 0.3% to 1,975, the strongest level since early March.

Meanwhile, the supramax index advanced 1.2% to 1,415.

Baltic Dry Index at Near 1-Week Low
The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, eased a third consecutive session on Tuesday, falling about 0.5% to a near one-week low of 3,205 points, pressured by the larger vessel segments. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, decreased by 0.7% to 5,459 points; and the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, shed 23 points at 2,321 points. Conversely, the supramax index rose 7 points to 1,577 points.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, decreased for a second session on Monday, down 0.1% to 3,222 points, pressured by the larger vessel segment. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, fell by 0.1% to 5,496 points. On the other hand, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, added 1 point to 2,344 points; and the supramax index edged up 1 point to 1,570 points.

Baltic Dry Index Edges Down, But Climbs 20% in May
The Baltic Exchange dry bulk index, which measures shipping rates for vessels carrying dry commodities, slipped 0.1% to 3,224 on Friday. The capesize index, covering ships that typically transport 150,000 ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, fell 0.3% to 5,503. In contrast, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose 0.5% to 2,343. The supramax index was unchanged at 1,569. Despite the decline, the broader Baltic index gained 20% over the month of May.
