Baltic Dry Index Downward Trend Continues, Posts Weekly Loss

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, was down for a seventh straight session on Friday, slumping 3.9% to its lowest since November 17 at 2,205 points.
The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also declined for a seventh day, slipping 5.6% to its lowest since November 24 at 3,706 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, eased for the 12th straight session, falling about 2.1% to an over two-month low of 1,688 points.
Among smaller vessels, the supramax index shed 16 points at 1,371 points.
The benchmark index posted a weekly loss of 15.9%, its steepest decline since January 20.
