Sensex Rebounds on Tech Strength

2026-10-09 04:56 By Jereli Escobar 1 min. read

India’s BSE Sensex rose about 1.1% to 72,367 on Friday, rebounding from steep losses in the previous session that pushed the index to a 32-month low, as IT stocks led a technical rebound.

Tata Consultancy Services advanced 5.0% after reporting stronger AI-related revenue and international business growth in the September quarter.

However, gains were capped by elevated crude oil prices amid intensifying Middle East tensions and supply concerns stemming from a hurricane approaching the US Gulf Coast.

Fresh US restrictions on the green-card programme for major IT firms also raised concerns over staffing costs.

Persistent foreign investor outflows and rupee weakness further weighed on sentiment, with foreign portfolio investors selling a net 129.44 billion rupees ($1.3 billion) in Indian equities on Thursday, their largest single-day outflow since May 29.

Other notable gainers included Infosys (3.0%), Apollo Hospitals (3.01%), HDFC Bank (1.3%), Hexaware (9.6%), and Cupid (2.6%).

Indian Stocks Slide to Near 3-Year Lows
Indian equities slumped for a second session to 32-month lows on Thursday, tracking negative momentum in global stock markets amid a surge in energy costs that reignited the rally in bond yields. The S&P/BSE Sensex fell 1.4% to 71,593 and the NSE Nifty 50 lost 1.6% to 22,232. Oil and fuel prices surged on reports that the Pentagon could be planning strikes against Iran, threatening recent progress in tanker transit across the Middle East. The increase in inflation risks lifted Indian yields after the RBI hiked its policy rate yesterday for the first time in three years, hampering credit activity. High energy prices also pressured the rupee amid capital outflows, which commonly drive foreign investors to divest from rupee-denominated stocks. Industrials and power-hungry manufacturers fell sharply, with Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Power Grid, ITC, and Tata Steel sinking between 2.5% and 4%.
