The SENSEX Index Closes 0.33% Lower

India’s BSE Sensex closed about 0.3% down at 72,529.1 on Tuesday, its lowest since late March, marking the second session of losses. Market sentiment remained subdued amid elevated crude oil prices and global bond yeilds, persistent geopolitical tensions and continued foreign investor selling. Foreign institutional investors sold 53.53 billion rupees ($558 million) of Indian shares on Monday, taking September net sales to $2.17 billion after two consecutive months of net buying. Selling pressure was seen across most sectors, particularly financials, tech companies and autos. Titan (-2.7%) led losses among stocks, followed by HCL Tech (-2.3%), TCS (-1.7%), UltraTech Cement (-1.6%), Hindustan Unilever (-1.5%) and Tech Mahindra (1.5%). Bajaj Finace (-1.2%), Reliance (-1.2%), Maruti (-1.2%) and ICICI Bank (-0.7%) also declined. On the opposite side, Adani Ports emerged as the top performer, rising 4.4%, followed by Sun Pharma (1.1%), Tata Steel (1.1%) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (1%).

The SENSEX Index decreased 243 points or 0.33 percent on Tuesday to close at 72529 points. The decline was led by Titan Company (-3.00%), HCL Tech (-1.93%) and Indusind Bank (-1.70%). On the upside, the strongest performers were Adani Ports (1.40%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.33%) and NTPC (1.21%).

India’s BSE Sensex fell about 0.8% to 72,189 on Tuesday, its lowest since late March, extending the previous session’s losses and hovering near a six-month low as rising oil prices drove the decline, while persistent foreign outflows and elevated US Treasury yields also weighed on sentiment. Brent crude rose around 1.5% to above $107 a barrel, fueling concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and corporate margins given its heavy reliance on imported oil. The rupee also weakened past 96 per dollar, adding pressure on equities as higher oil prices threaten to widen the trade deficit and stoke imported inflation. The weakness came despite stronger-than-expected economic data, with industrial output rising 8% year-on-year in August, above the 6.5% forecast and July’s 7.4%, while manufacturing output increased 9% from 8.2%. Notable laggards included Honasa Consumer (-2.8%), HDFC Bank (-1.5%), State Bank of India (-0.7%), Reliance Industries (-1.1%), and PB Fintech (-3.5%).
