Sensex Opens Week Higher

2026-09-21 04:44 By Jereli Escobar 1 min. read

India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.6% to 74,738 on Monday, rebounding from losses in the previous session as easing oil prices provided support to the benchmark, although crude prices remained elevated and heavy IPO activity capped broader gains.

Oil prices remained a key focus for investors, with Brent crude trading around $101.6 a barrel after falling 2.2% in the previous session, but remaining at levels that could add to India’s inflation pressures and weigh on the country’s trade balance.

Investors were also tracking the impact of a busy primary market.

The roughly $2.3 billion IPO of the National Stock Exchange was due to close on Monday, adding to competition for liquidity alongside several other new share offerings.

Meanwhile, fintech platform Moneyview is targeting a valuation of up to about 59.85 billion rupees ($624 million) in its upcoming IPO, which is scheduled to open on Sept. 24.

Among stocks, HDFC Bank (0.6%), Welspun (1.9%), Reliance (1.1%), and Jyoti CNC (4.2%) gained.

Sensex Closes Marginally Down
India’s BSE Sensex shed nearly 20 points to settle at 74,295 on Friday, tracking cautious global sentiment after the US Federal Reserve delivered its first interest-rate hike in more than three years and signalled further increases this year. This raised concerns over foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, while geopolitical tensions remained elevated. At the same time, ongoing strong IPO activity continued to put pressure on the market. Tata Group stocks led losses, with TCS, Titan and Tata Steel falling between 1.7% and 4.3%, amid fresh uncertainty about the conglomerate's control structure and leadership. Other top losers included Asian Paints (-2%), Maruti (-2%), Tech Mahindra (-1.8%), Sun Pharma (-1.6%) and NTPC (-1.6%). On the flip side, Adani Ports outperformed, climbing 3.8%, after global brokerage Jefferies highlighted multiple growth drivers across the group’s infrastructure and energy businesses. For the week, the index shed about 0.7%.
