The SENSEX Index Closes 0.73% Lower

India’s BSE Sensex finished about 0.7% down at 75,577.6 on Tuesday, a level last seen in June and marking the second session of losses. The continued rally in oil prices and escalating hostilities in the Middle East kept market sentiment under pressure, while concerns persisted over volatility stemming from the new closing-auction pricing mechanism. Banking heavyweights were among the key drags, led by a 2% decline in ICICI Bank, while Axis Bank and HDFC Bank fell 1.7% and 1.1%, respectively. Reliance Industries and UltraTech Cement declined 1.2% each. On the upside, shares of Indian defense companies, including BEL, gained 1.5% after the government granted preliminary approval for military purchases worth about $11 billion. The SENSEX Index decreased 555 points or 0.73 percent on Tuesday to close at 75578 points. The decline was led by ICICI Bank (-1.97%), Axis Bank (-1.67%) and Reliance Industries (-1.34%). On the upside, the strongest performers were Hindustan Unilever (1.03%), Adani Ports (0.78%) and Eternal Limited (0.19%).

Oil prices remained a key concern for Indian equities, with Brent crude trading around $97 a barrel as risks of a prolonged Middle East conflict raised concerns over global supply. Markets were also watching liquidity conditions after the Reserve Bank of India withdrew more than 6 trillion rupees of excess liquidity from the banking system on Monday. Meanwhile, India’s equity capital markets remain active, with six IPOs set to launch on the same day this week in a potentially record-setting rush. Notable laggards included IFCI (-7.0%), PC Jeweller (-2.9%), Jindal (-2.7%), and Vodafone (-1.0%).
