Sensex Rebounds as Financials Advance

2026-09-03 04:44 By Jereli Escobar 1 min. read

India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.4% to 76,889 on Thursday, led by gains in financials and rebounding from the previous session’s losses after the benchmark hit a more than one-month low.

Investor sentiment was also supported by a surge in foreign-currency deposits from non-resident Indians, with over $60 billion mobilised in the final 10 days of the RBI’s swap scheme, taking the total to about $136 billion.

The inflows bolstered India’s FX reserves and gave the RBI greater room to support the rupee, easing pressure on local assets.

However, gains in equities were capped by elevated crude oil prices and renewed tensions in the Middle East.

Investors are also watching global interest-rate expectations, including the possibility of a US Federal Reserve rate hike.

Financials led the gains, with HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, and Axis Bank rising 1.1%–1.9%.

Other notable gainers across sectors included Milky Mist (1.2%), Netweb (4.3%), Anant Raj (7%), and Welspun Corp (3.1%).

Sensex Finishes at Over 1-Month Low
India’s BSE Sensex ended about 0.5% down at 76,570 on Wednesday, its lowest level since July 24, extending losses for the third session. Investors remained cautious as rising hostilities between the US and Iran continued to exert upward pressure on international oil prices. The US carried out overnight airstrikes on targets in Iran, prompting retaliation from Tehran in the most serious escalation of tensions between the two countries in weeks. The crude rally pushed global bond yields higher, reflecting growing concerns that sustained inflationary pressures could keep central banks from easing policy or force them to tighten further. Asian Paints, HDFC Bank and Mahindra & Mahindra were the biggest laggards, each falling around 1.6%. Other top losers included HCL Technologies (-1.5%), BEL (-1.3%), Infosys (-1.3%), SBIN (-1.2%) and airline operator IndiGo (-1%). Among the gainers, Adani Ports rose 1.6% after the company reported its highest ever monthly cargo volume.
