Sensex Extends Gains to Fifth Day

2026-08-04 04:41 By Jereli Escobar 1 min. read

India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.3% to 78,857 on Tuesday, marking a fifth straight day of gains, even as broader market sentiment remained cautious following the previous session's technically driven rally.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) was among the biggest drags on sentiment, with its shares tumbling around 6.7% after the government announced plans to sell up to a 6.5% stake through an offer for sale.

The benchmark Nifty 50 traded lower after Monday's late-session rally, which was largely driven by a new closing auction process rather than a broad improvement in market sentiment.

Investors also remained watchful of external risks, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on crude oil prices and the Indian rupee, while awaiting further domestic and global cues.

Among notable movers included Ather Energy (13.5%), Restaurant Brands Asia (10.9%), Deepak (6.3%), KEI (6.3%), and CG Power (5.6%).

Sensex Rises to 14-Week High
India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.7% to 78,661 on Monday, extending gains for a fourth straight session and reaching its highest level since April 21, as lower crude oil prices lifted sentiment in the import-dependent economy. Oil prices fell amid optimism over potential US-Iran diplomatic progress, easing concerns about supply disruptions. Investors now await the RBI's policy meeting, where the central bank is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged. Markets will also watch HSBC manufacturing PMI, forecast to ease to 53.9 in July from 54.2 in June, alongside key US economic releases for further direction. Foreign investors have also returned to Indian equities, with improving growth and earnings expectations supporting sentiment as AI-driven trades lose momentum elsewhere in Asia. Among individual stocks, notable movers included Urban Company (13.6%), Aditya (5.1%), Redington (4.7%), and Divi’s Lab (4.2%). On the losing side, ZEE (-10.7%), and Muthoot (-9.7%) declined.
