The SENSEX Index Closes 1.69% Lower

India’s BSE Sensex opened roughly 0.5% lower at 74,171 on Wednesday, marking its fifth consecutive sessions of losses, as markets remained volatile amid elevated crude oil prices, sustained foreign outflows, and geopolitical uncertainty linked to the Iran conflict. Foreign portfolio investors have reportedly pulled $23.14 billion from Indian equities so far in 2026, surpassing the record level of selling seen in 2025. Meanwhile, India’s April inflation rose slightly to 3.48% from 3.4% in March, below market expectations of 3.8%, though concerns over rising energy costs continue to cloud the economic outlook. Among individual stocks, Tata Power fell 5% after reporting weak March-quarter results, weighed down by a 4.5% decline in profit driven by weakness in its hydro and thermal segments following a plant shutdown in Gujarat. Other notable laggards were Kalyan Jewelleres (-5.6%), KEI (-1.7%), and Power Grid (-2.7%). On the upside, Billionbrains (+4.3%), and Vedanta (+3.3%) posted gains.

The SENSEX Index dropped 1283 points or 1.69 percent on Tuesday to close at 74732 points. Losses were led by Tech Mahindra (-4.21%), Adani Ports (-4.10%) and HCL Tech (-4.01%).

India’s BSE Sensex opened about 0.9% lower at 75,355 on Tuesday, marking a fourth consecutive session of losses, pressured by higher oil prices and growing perceptions that a US-Iran ceasefire or settlement remains unstable. Crude prices surged again after remarks suggested that US-Iran negotiations were nearing collapse, reigniting concerns over prolonged supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The rupee closed at a record low, adding pressure on foreign flows and imported inflation. Foreign investors sold INR 84.38 billion on Monday, the largest outflow since April 24, while domestic institutions bought INR 59.4 billion, partly offsetting the selling. India’s April inflation data is also due later today, with estimates pointing to a rise to 3.8% from 3.4% in March, moving closer to the central bank’s 4% target. Among individual stocks, notable laggards included Billionbrains (-4.2%), Vodafone (-3.7%), Infosys (-3.6%), JSW Energy (-7.9%), TCS (-3.4%), and Kalyan (-3.4%).
