The SENSEX Index Closes 0.15% Lower

India’s BSE Sensex oscillated between gains and losses before settling down around 0.2% at 77,844.5 on Thursday, as profit-taking emerged after the previous session’s rally driven by optimism over a potential US–Iran peace deal and the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Investors held a cautious stance as Washington awaited Tehran’s response to the latest peace framework, with Trump calling it too early for direct talks, while an Iranian lawmaker said the US proposal was more idealistic than workable. FMGC stocks, IT and financials were the most pressured. Among key movers, Hindustan Unilever was the top loser, falling 1.95%, followed by Tata Consultancy Services (-1.4%), Tech Mahindra (-1.3%), Titan Company (-1.1%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (-1%) and ITC Limited (-0.95%). On the upside, Mahindra & Mahindra (+2%) outperformed, extending post-results momentum. NTPC (1.5%) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.2%) were also among the top gainers.

The SENSEX Index fell 114 points or 0.15 percent on Thursday to close at 77845 points. Leading the losses are Hindustan Unilever (-1.90%), Tata Consultancy (-1.33%) and Titan Company (-1.16%). Top gainers were Mahindra & Mahindra (1.98%), NTPC (1.30%) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.04%).

Market participants remained cautious as Washington awaited Tehran’s response, with Trump saying it was too early for direct talks while an Iranian lawmaker called the US proposal more wishlist than reality. Among notable movers, One 97 Communications jumped 5.8% after signaling faster growth in FY2027 compared with FY2026. HFCL (+2%), Meesho (+3%), Hindustan (+4.3%), and Polycab (+5.1%) also posted gains. On the flip side, Godrej Consumer Products slipped 4.8% despite reporting nearly 10% growth in fourth-quarter profit, supported by robust volumes and steady domestic demand. Other laggards included Wockhardt (-3.5%), PB Fintech (-2%), Himadri (-2.5%), and Billionbrains (-2.1%).
