India 10Y Yield Hits Near 2-Year High

The yield on India’s 10-year G-Sec rose to around 7.17%, reaching its highest level in nearly two years, as elevated US Treasury yields and expectations of further rate hikes kept pressure on Indian yields.

The US 10-year yield hovered near 5.2%, its highest level in nearly two decades, as stronger economic data and hawkish Fed signals lifted bets on further rate increases.

Expectations of an RBI hike next week have also strengthened following August inflation of 4.82% and the Fed’s recent move.

However, a reduction in planned five-year and 10-year bond issuance for October-March could offer some relief after the recent selloff.

The government plans to borrow INR 7.86 trillion during the period, with the share of 5-year and 10-year bonds cut to 12.1% and 26.3%, respectively, from 15.4% and 29% in the first half.

India 10Y Yield Hits 4-Month High
The yield on India’s 10-year G-Sec rose to 7.14%, extending gains to reach its highest level since May as a sharp selloff in US Treasuries, elevated crude prices, and heavy domestic debt supply continued to weigh on sentiment. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5.1%, its highest since 2007, after Federal Reserve officials signalled the need for further rate hikes, while Brent crude remained around $105 a barrel, raising inflation concerns and expectations of a hawkish RBI stance. Domestic pressure was also amplified by the government’s INR 340 billion bond auction, with traders watching the 7.15% level as a key threshold for the benchmark yield. The rise in shorter-tenor rates also reflected firmer expectations of higher near-term policy rates, with the five-year rate jumping 9 bps on Thursday.

India 10Y Yield Steady as Oil, US Yields Ease
The yield on India’s 10-year G-Sec hovered around 7.0%, trading in a tight range as lower oil prices supported bonds, while firm expectations of an RBI rate hike capped gains. Brent crude fell nearly 10% from last week’s peak to around $98 a barrel as supply flows improved and shipments through the Strait of Hormuz resumed, easing inflation concerns. However, August inflation at 4.82% and the Federal Reserve’s recent rate hike have strengthened expectations of an RBI rate increase at its October 7 meeting. The benchmark 6.94% 2036 yield was at 7.0052%, after ending at 7.0106% Tuesday, down six basis points from Friday. Market participants also digested stronger PMI data, with the Manufacturing PMI rising to 55.7 in September from 52.8 in August, while the Composite PMI climbed to 56.5 from 54.6, marking the fastest private-sector expansion since June.
