Retail sales in Hong Kong fell by 3.3% year-on-year in April 2025, following a downwardly revised 4.7% drop in the previous month.
This marked the fourteenth consecutive month of falling retail activity albeit the softest in the sequence.
The decline was mainly driven by the decrease in consumer goods (-21.6% vs -17.9% in March), motor vehicles & parts (-52.6% vs 47.6), and fuels (-9.9% vs -2%).
Sales of furniture & fixtures (-14.3% vs -15.3%), breads, pastry, confectionary & biscuits (-13.5% vs -14.6%), and clothing, footwear & allied products (-2.9% vs -9.7%) also dropped, though at a slower pace than in the prior month.
On the other hand, costs rebounded for other consumer goods (7.3% vs -2%) and medicines and cosmetics (5.3 vs -0.8).
A government spokesman noted that proactive tourism and events will help in the recovery of the retail sector though ongoing changes in consumption patterns and competition among businesses, will still pose challenges.
