Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall the Most in 4 Months

Retail sales in Hong Kong dropped by 11.5% year-on-year in December 2024, slipping further from an upwardly revised 8.4% decrease in the previous month.
This marked the tenth consecutive month of falling retail activity and the sharpest since August, as sales fell further for jewelry, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts (-16.3% vs -8.2% in November), supermarkets (-8.9% vs -1.1%), and footwear, allied products and other clothing accessories (-5% vs -0.9%).
Additionally, trade tumbled for clothing, footwear and allied products (-8.2% vs 0.4%).
Conversely, sales decline at a softer pace for fuels (-8% vs -10.6%) and department stores (-9.9% vs -12.3%).
On a monthly basis, retail sales rose by 2.9%, following a 3.2% loss in the preceding period.
