Arabica Coffee Futures at Near 3-Month Low

2025-12-15 16:28 By Luisa Carvalho 1 min. read

Arabica coffee futures traded around $3.5 per pound, holding close to the lowest September 23, pressured by the prospect of improved coffee supply in top producer Brazil.

A report released by Hedgepoint Global Markets on December 12 projected the 2026/27 Brazilian coffee crop to be between 71 and 74.4 million bags, with favorable October–November rainfall boosting Arabica flowering, while robusta production remained strong, supporting a replenishment of global coffee inventories.

Arabica production is forecast at 46.5-49 million bags, up from 37.7 million harvested in 2025/26, while Robusta output is seen at 24.6-25.4 million bags.

Earlier, the country’s crop forecasting agency, Conab, raised its total 2025 coffee production estimate by 2.4% to 56.54 million bags, up 4.3% from 2024, marking the third-largest output on record despite an “off-year” in the Arabica biennial cycle.

The European deforestation law delay and expected US shipments post-tariff removal also weighed on prices.

Arabica Coffee Futures at Over 3-Month High
Arabica coffee futures traded around $3.1 per pound, near levels not seen since March, as traders weighed signs of tightening inventories while monitoring the pace of Brazil's harvest. Arabica certified stocks at ICE fell by another 3,069 bags to 377,465, the lowest level since March 2024. In the same period last year, the volume was 841,173 bags, a reduction of 463,708 bags in twelve months. The market also factored in delays to Brazil’s harvest due to rainfall in major producing areas, alongside quality concerns, with investment funds increasing activity amid weather uncertainties. Coffee harvest in Brazil reached 44% as of June 24, below 51% a year earlier and the five-year average of 47%, according to Safras & Mercado. Meanwhile, Climatempo indicated that dry weather is expected to prevail in the first half of July, supporting harvest and post-harvest activities, with no forecast of rainfall as frequent as in June.

Coffee Prices Below Recent Highs
Arabica coffee futures traded around $2.70 per pound, supported by a stronger US dollar and signs of progress in US-Iran negotiations. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has tightened coffee supply chains by pushing up global shipping, insurance, fertiliser, and fuel costs, increasing pressure on coffee importers and roasters. At the same time, traders are closely monitoring the El Niño weather pattern, with attention extending beyond the current harvest to its potential impact on Brazil’s 2026/27 production cycle. Coffee trader Commercial noted that El Niño could delay seasonal rains in Brazil this September and October, a critical period for tree flowering, potentially weighing on the country’s upcoming crop. Brazil’s coffee harvest for the 2026/27 season has reached 39% of the planted area as of June 17, according to Safras & Mercado, below 43% a year earlier and slightly under the five-year average of 40%.
