Baltic Dry Index Falls for 3rd Session

The Baltic dry index fell 1.8% to 3445 on Monday, extending losses for the third session to its lowest level since September 2.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, declined 2.8% to 5912.

Also, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, went down 0.6% to 2393.

On the other hand, the supramax index increased 0.4% to 1725.

Meanwhile, the number of commodity ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz fell to fewer than 10 per day over the weekend, according to early ship-tracking data released Monday.

This was lower than the 10-day average of 14 ships per day.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was down for a second session on Friday, falling by 0.4% to its lowest since September 3 at 3,507 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also decreased for a second day, down 0.7% to 6,080 points; and the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 0.1% to 2,407 points. On the other hand, the supramax index rose by 0.3% to 1,719 points. The benchmark index declined 3.3% for the week.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, snapped a two-day winning streak on Thursday, dropping about 2.7% to a one-week low of 3,521 points. Weaker rates across larger segments were behind the decline. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also halted a two-day advance, slipping 4.3% to 6,122 points; and the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 0.2% to 2,409 points. Conversely, the supramax index rose by 0.5% to 1,713 points.
