Baltic Dry Index at Over 1-Month Low, Posts Weekly Loss

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, eased for a third session on Friday, down 2.3% to its lowest since November 5 at 2,023 points, amid seasonal low demand.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also decreased for a third day, falling about 1.4% to a one-month low of 3,624 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, declined for the 17th straight session, dropping 4.8% to its lowest since June 10 at 1,323 points.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index shed 36 points at 1,222 points.

For the week, the benchmark index was down over 8%.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, extended its decline into a fifth consecutive session on Friday, falling about 2.6% to its lowest since mid-April at 2,524 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, dropped 4.9% to 3,640 points; and the supramax index decreased by 0.5% to its lowest since June 15 at 1,670 points. By contrast, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose by 0.7% to 2,110 points. For the week, the benchmark index posted a 7.3% decline.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, declined for the fourth session on Thursday, falling about 1.6% to its lowest since April 17 at 2,591 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, slumped by 3.1% to 3,827 points; and the supramax index went down by 0.9% to its lowest since June 15 at 1,678 points. Conversely, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose by 1.2% to 2,096 points.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, eased for the third session on Wednesday, falling about 1.2% to its lowest since April 20 at 2,634 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, dropped about 2.4% to its lowest since June 18 at 3,950 points; and the supramax decreased by 0.7% to 1,693 points. On the other hand, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose 1.3% to 2,071 points. Shipbroker Allied noted that while dry bulk and product tankers have shown early signs of recovery, market traffic remains below long-term averages as participants assess the durability of the current US-Iran framework.
