On the other hand, orders advanced faster for electronic products (10.2% from 9.6%) and chemicals (14.8% from 10.5%). Among major trading partners, export orders declined from ASEAN countries (-1.1%) and Japan (-8%); while increased from China & Hong Kong (1.3%); the US (3.7%) and Europe (13%).

Wholesale prices in Taiwan rose 6.55 percent year-on-year in September of 2018, below 6.83 percent in August and the lowest rate in four months. Prices increased at a slower pace for manufacturing products (4.95 percent compared to 5.5 percent in August), namely petroleum and coal (33.18 percent compared to 35.1 percent); and chemical material, other chemical products & pharmaceuticals (10.92 percent compared to 13.9 percent). Also, cost continued to declined for computers, electronics and optical products (-2.73 percent compared to -2.66 percent). On the other hand, prices rose faster for crude petroleum and natural gas (54.68 percent compared to 51.91); electronic parts and components (0.98 percent compared to 0.84 percent); and cost rebounded for agriculture, forestry, fishing & animal husbandry (2.34 percent compared to -2.4 percent). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices rose 0.55 percent, following a 0.53 percent rise in August.

Prices rose faster for food (2.46 percent from 0.74 percent in August), namely eggs (32.26 percent); clothing (1.85 percent compared to 1.43 percent); tobacco and betel nuts (25.78 percent), due higher cigarette taxes; and fuels and lubricants (19.28 percent). On the other hand, inflation slowed for housing (0.8 percent from 0.85 percent); transportation & communication (2.85 percent from 3.82 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (5.08 percent from 5.8 percent); education & entertainment (0.3 percent from 0.54 percent); and health (0.83 percent from 1.03 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy eased to 1.2 percent from 1.36 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.14 percent, after a 0.04 percent gain in August.

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.8 in September 2018 from 53 in a month earlier and marking the lowest reading since June 2016. Output dropped for the first time since May 2016, as new orders and export sales declined. Also, purchasing activity rose at the softest pace since June 2016. Meanwhile, employment grew fractionally after stagnating in August. Inflationary pressures remained historically strong, with the rate of average purchasing costs rose sharply, despite the rate of inflation softening to a 14-month low. Firms raise their factory gate prices at a solid pace, due to higher cost burdens. Looking ahead, business confidence improved to a three-month high, driven by forecasts of rising client demand and new product launches.

The Central Bank of Taiwan left its key discount rate steady at 1.375 percent on September 27th 2018, in line with market expectations. Policymakers said a continued accommodative monetary policy will help ensure price and financial stability and foster economic growth. The Bank stated that global trade tensions resulted in a deterioration of domestic exports, which negatively impact economic growth. However, Taiwan's economy is seen advancing at an annual rate of 2.73 percent in 2018, above the previous 2.68 percent projection, supported by strong domestic demand. Inflation is forecasted at 1.5 percent, above 1.21 percent in the June projection.

Contrarily, sales rose faster for food, beverages & tobacco (2.6 percent vs 1.1 percent), and dropped less for fabrics & clothes (-0.1 percent vs -0.2 percent) and information & communications equipment & electrical household appliances (-2.9 percent vs -5.8 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales went down 1.9 percent, after an upwardly revised 1.7 percent gain in July.
