Taiwan Retail Sales YoY at 4.45 percent  
Retail sales in Taiwan increased 4.45 percent year-on-year in April of 2019, higher than an upwardly revised 1.33 percent gain in March. Sales rebounded for autos and motorcycles (6.62 percent vs -9.93 percent in March) and information & communications equipment & electrical household appliances (1.80 percent vs -4.06 percent) while those increased faster for food, beverages & tobacco (1.77 percent vs 0.40 percent); pharmaceutical & medical goods (3.64 percent vs 2.71 percent) and fuel & related products (3.37 percent vs 0.71 percent). On the other hand, construction materials sales continued to fall (-0.75 percent vs -0.39 percent). On a monthly basis, retail trade went up 2.95 percent, following a 7.14 percent rise in March.

The central bank of Taiwan left its key policy rate unchanged at 1.375 percent on March 21st 2019, matching market expectations, saying Taiwan's economy would likely expand at a somewhat slower pace this year due to lower global growth and persistent uncertainties over the international economic, trade, and financial prospects. In addition, the actual output remains below potential and inflationary pressures are expected to be subdued. Policymakers forecast Taiwan's GDP growth to be 2.13 percent in 2019, lower than the previous year. Inflation and core inflation for 2019 are seen at 0.91% and 0.78%, respectively.

Imports rose 2.6 percent to USD 23.15 billion, missing market consensus of a 3.5 percent gain, fuelled by purchases of mineral products (15.2%), of which petroleum (27%) and machinery (18.6%). In contrast, imports fell for parts of electronic product (-0.9%); chemicals (-12.1%) and base metals (-7.5 percent). Purchases rose mainly from China & Hong Kong (2.8%), ASEAN (7.1%) and the US (20%).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices advanced 0.15 percent, following a 0.1 percent gain in March.

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI fell to 48.2 in April 2019 from 49.0 in March. The latest reading pointed to the seventh consecutive contraction in factory activity, as output dropped for the eighth straight month amid weaker demand. Additionally, new orders fell at a faster pace mainly due to a decline in export sales and the job creation rate decreased, as sales dropped. On the price front, input prices went down due to lower cost of raw materials and output cost fell amid efforts to boost sales. Lastly, optimism improved slightly, still it remained below than the series trend.

The Taiwanese economy advanced 1.72 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, slowing from a 1.78 percent growth in the prior quarter, but above market consensus of a 1.66 percent expansion, an advance estimate showed. It remained the weakest growth rate since the second quarter of 2016, as government spending shrank 3.37 percent after expanding 3.55 in Q4 and private consumption slowed to 1.45 percent from 1.67 percent. Also, gross capital formation eased sharply (6.8 percent vs 9.42 percent), mostly due to a decline in transport equipment. Net trade contributed negatively to the GDP, as exports rose 1.2 percent (vs 1.29 percent in Q4) and imports increased 1.47 percent (vs 4.29 percent). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.49 percent, after expanding 0.37 percent in the previous period.
