Taiwan Industrial Production at 3.25 percent  
Industrial production in Taiwan increased 3.25 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, faster than a downwardly revised 2.08 percent rise in July. Output expanded for manufacturing (4.03 percent vs 2.64 percent in July), mainly boosted by the production of machinery & equipment (14.21 percent vs 7.41 percent); motor vehicles & parts (11.43 percent vs -2.9 percent); petroleum & coal products (8.40 percent vs 5.18 percent); beverages (8.14 percent vs -9.68 percent) and leather products (7.30 percent vs -7.18 percent). In addition, output declined less for mining & quarrying (-0.18 percent vs -0.41 percent) and electricity & gas supply (-2.30 percent vs -6.59 percent). Meanwhile, production slowed for water supply (1.21 percent vs 3.24 percent) while building construction plunged (-21.11 percent vs -9.19 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output rose 2.3 percent. For January-to-August period, industrial production advanced 3.1 percent over a year earlier.

Taiwan Unemployment Rate at 3.76 percent  
The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Taiwan fell to 3.76 percent from 3.94 percent a year earlier. It is the lowest unemployment rate since July 2015 as the number of employed increased by 0.09 million to 11.358 million and the number of unemployed declined by 19 thousand to 443 thousand. The male unemployment rate decreased to 4.01 percent from 4.22 percent and for females it dropped to 3.44 percent from 3.62 percent. Meanwhile, the labour force participation rose to 58.83 percent from 58.74 percent in the previous year.

Taiwan Retail Sales YoY at 4.30 percent  
Retail sales in Taiwan increased 4.3 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, rebounding from a downwardly revised 1.55 percent fall in July. It is the highest increase in retail sales since January as sales recovered for automobiles and motorcycles (30.31 percent compared to -2.86 percent in July); household supplies (0.95 percent compared to -8.81 percent) and pharmaceuticals and medical goods (1.54 compared to -0.17 percent), while went up faster for fuels (5.27 compared to 3.34 percent). On the other hand, sales fell for food beverages and tobacco (-3.36 percent compared to 0.17 percent); fabrics and clothes (-0.17 percent compared to 0.35 percent); communication (-2.48 percent compared to -2.36 percent) and educational and entertainment articles (-0.4 percent compared to -3.36 percent). On a monthly basis, retail trade increased 1 percent.

Export orders from Taiwan increased 7.5% year-on-year to USD 40.78 billion in August of 2017, below a 10.5% rise in July and market expectations of an 8.5% gain. Orders rose less for information and communication products (0.2% compared to 13.9 % in July); electronics (1% compared to 4.2%); optical, photographic, cinematographic apparatus (21.9% compared to 22.7%) and electrical machinery products (7.7% compared to 16.3%). On the other hand, orders rose faster for basic metals and articles thereof (19.12% compared to 12.8%); machinery (13.2% compared to 12.5%); plastics and rubber articles (20.9% compared to 9.5%); chemicals (12.2% compared to 9.6%) and transport equipment (9.8% compared to 5.6%) and rebounded for textiles (6.2% compared to -1.9%). Exports orders fell from the US (-0.8% compared to 7.7%) and slowed from Europe (21.3% compared to 23.2%). In contrast, orders rose faster from China and Hong Kong (11.6% compared to 10.7%) and Japan (13% compared to 8.3%).

Taiwwan posted a trade surplus of USD 5.71 billion in August of 2017, higher than a USD 3.99 billion surplus a year earlier. Exports jumped 12.7% year-on-year to USD 27.77 billion, boosted by sales of parts of electronic products (14.4%); information, communication and audio-video products (13%); base metals and articles of base metal (15.5%); machinery (16.8%) and plastics & rubber and articles thereof (16.2%). Shipments to China which accounted for 41% of total sales increased 14.5%. Imports went up 6.9% to USD 22.05 billion, led by purchases of parts of electronic products (20.8%); mineral products (12.5%); chemicals (6.7%); base metals and articles of base metal (10.7%). Imports from China accounted for 20% of the total and increased 11.9%. In contrast, those from Japan declined 6.8%. Considering the first eight months of the year, exports went up 12.5% and imports rose at a faster 13.8%. The trade surplus increased by 6.7% to USD 33.9 billion.

Taiwan Wholesale Prices Change at 1.03 percent  
Wholesale prices in Taiwan increased 1.03 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, following a 0.73 percent drop in July. It is the first annual rise in wholesale prices in four months. Cost went up the most for quarrying products and other mineral products (31.72 percent); tobacco (21.3 percent); basic metals (11.07 percent) and petroleum and coal products (9.49 percent). On the other hand, the biggest decline was recorded for non-metallic mineral products (-6.68 percent) and machinery and equipment (-3.84 percent). On a monthly basis, the WPI went up 0.68 percent.

The Nikkei Manufacturing PMI in Taiwan edged up to 54.3 in August of 2017 from 53.6 in June. It was the 15th straight month of expansion in factory activity as production rose at the fastest rate since March. Higher output was attributed to increased amounts of new work, while new orders accelerated due to continued strength in new exports. Also, employment rose to a 4-month high mainly as a result of greater production requirements and strong client demand. Purchasing activity increased to a 5-month high although delivery times continued to lengthen sharply. On the price front, input costs and output prices both increased at a faster pace. Business optimism was at its highest in 4-months.

The current account surplus in Taiwan widened by USD 0.68 billion to USD 17.65 billion in the second quarter of 2017 from a USD 16.97 billion surplus a year earlier. The goods trade surplus widened by USD 0.97 billion to USD 18.28 billion as a continued global economic recovery, steady demand for semiconductors, and a lower base effect combined to drive export growth higher. The primary income account registered a USD 3.31 billion surplus, a modest increase of around USD 2 million, mainly owing to an increase in banks' interest income. On the other hand, the services deficit widened by USD 0.14 billion to USD 2.91 billion, mainly owing to a decrease in travel receipts as well as an increase in travel payments. The secondary income gap went up by USD 0.16 billion to USD 1.04 billion mainly because of increases in workers' outward remittances and in residents' remittances to overseas relatives.

Taiwan GDP Annual Growth Rate at 2.13 percent  
The Taiwanese economy expanded 2.13% year-on-year in Q2 2017, slightly above a preliminary reading of 2.1% and compared to an upwardly revised 2.66% in Q1, final figures showed. On the demand side, private consumption rose slightly more than anticipated (2.05% compared to 2% in the preliminary reading), mainly due to spending on financial transactions and foreign travels. Gross capital formation growth was also revised higher (0.17% compared to 0.1%) and the contribution from net trade was nearly the same (exports went up 4.97% compared to 5% and imports rose 7.4% compared to 4%). On the other hand, public spending rose slightly less (0.82% compared to 1%). On the production side, the manufacturing sector grew by 3.81% (3.86% in the first estimate), mainly due a surge in the output of semiconductor and machinery-and-equipment. The wholesale & retail trade sector expanded 2.95%, in line with earlier figures. The economy is expected to grow 2.11% in 2017 in 2.27% next year.
