Taiwan Export Orders at 40047.00 USD Million  
Taiwan's export orders declined 8.3 percent year-on-year to USD 40.05 billion in August 2019, the most in 5 months, following a 3 percent fall in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 2.3 percent decrease. It is the 10th consecutive decline as demand continued to drop for chemicals (-12.4 percent), mineral products (-8.2 percent), plastics and rubber (-4.3 percent), basic metals (-1.4 percent), machinery (-2.7 percent), information & communication products (-5.8 percent), and electrical machinery products (-0.3 percent). On the other hand, orders increased for optical, photographic, cinematographic apparatus (10.4 percent), electronic products (3.5 percent), textiles (2.5 percent), and transport equipment (0.4 percent). Among major trade partners, exports orders went down from Europe (-11.1 percent) and the US (-0.7 percent), but rose from China & Hong Kong (3.8 percent), ASEAN (3.1 percent), and Japan (-1.9 percent).

Taiwan Interest Rate at 1.38 percent  
The central bank of Taiwan left its key policy rate unchanged at 1.375 percent on September 19th 2019, as widely expected. Policymakers said that they will maintain accommodative monetary policy and added that will closely monitor developments in the US-China trade war, monetary policy trends of major economies, geopolitical situation, and the impact of global financial market changes on the domestic economic. The Committee noted a slowdown in domestic inflation and added that inflation outlook remains stable. Policymakers lowered its projections for inflation rate to 0.7 percent (vs 0.87 percent in August) for 2019 and the core inflation rate is seen at 0.56 percent (vs 0.76 percent in August projection). Inflation and core inflation for 2020 are expected to be at 0.88 percent and 0.77 percent, respectively. The Committee also revised its forecasts for Taiwan’s GDP growth to 2.40 percent from a previous 2.06 percent for 2019 and for 2020 the economy is expected to grow 2.34 percent.

The IHS Markit Taiwan Manufacturing PMI rose to 50.0 in September 2019 from 47.9 in the previous month, pointing to stable operating conditions in the manufacturing sector. The result ended an 11-month sequence of deterioration, as employment grew the most since May 2018, while both output and new orders fell at softer rates. Also, both export sales and buying levels shrank the least in four months. Meanwhile, backlogs of work increased for the first time in four months. On the cost front, input prices continued to decline, with the rate of inflation accelerating from August. As a result, firms opted to cut their output charges. Lastly, sentiment weakened to a fractional level due to worries over export conditions.
