Export orders from Taiwan went up 9.8 percent year-on-year to USD 39.11 billion in April of 2018, following a 3.1 percent increase in March and above market expectations of an 8.85 percent gain. Orders increased mostly for electronic products (12.1 percent); basic metals & articles thereof (16.5 percent); machineries (18.6 percent); plastics & rubber (18.9 percent); chemicals (24.9 percent); electrical machinery products (19.6 percent) and mineral products (59.5 percent). On the other hand, orders dropped for information & communication products (-0.3 percent). Among major trading partners, export orders went up from Japan (17.8 percent); Europe (13.6 percent); China & Hong Kong (4.9 percent); ASEAN countries (4.9 percent) and the US (4.6 percent). Considering the January to April period, export orders grew 0.8 percent.

Wholesale prices in Taiwan rose 2.53 percent year-on-year in April of 2018, following a 0.46 percent gain in March. It was the highest increase in wholesale prices since January 2017, as prices advanced faster for mining & quarrying (20.97 percent from 14.71 percent in March), mainly crude & natural gas (26.64 percent from 17.97 percent). Additionally, prices rebounded for manufacturing products (1.88 percent from -0.11 percent), namely transport equipment & parts (0.44 percent from -0.13 percent), metal products (0.40 percent from -0.65 percent). Also, prices fell at a softer pace for farm products (-10.53 percent from -11.25 percent). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices went up 1.05 percent, after a 0.19 percent drop in the previous month.

Meanwhile, cost eased for education & entertainment (0.22 percent from 0.30 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (5.43 percent from 5.89 percent) and health (0.86 percent from 1.11 percent). Also, cost of clothing & footwear dropped (-0.09 percent from 1.79 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy went up 1.30 percent, slowing from a 1.53 percent in the prior month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.17 percent, after a 0.07 percent increase in March.

The Taiwanese economy grew 3.04 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, easing from a 3.28 percent expansion in the previous period and above market expectations of 2.84 percent. The contribution from net export declined as imports jumped 5.61 percent (1.78 percent in Q4) and exports grew 6.03 percent, nearly the same as in Q4. On the other hand, private consumption increased faster (3.02 percent vs 2.89 percent), boosted by higher spending on transport, recreation & culture and financial services. In addition, government spending rebounded (6.27 percent vs -1.32 percent) and gross capital formation declined less (-1.7 percent vs -4.69 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the economy advanced 0.33 percent on quarter, below 1.07 percent in the previous period. .

In March, production rebounded for manufacturing (3.2 percent from -3.22 percent in February) and rose faster for water supply (2.43 percent from 2.04 percent). In addition, output fell less for mining & quarrying (-1.09 percent from -10.68 percent). In contrast, electricity & gas supply slowed (8.96 percent from 10.46 percent) and building construction fell (-15.27 percent from 52.83 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production edged up a seasonally adjusted 0.2 percent.
