Taiwan Inflation Rate at 1.75 percent  
The annual inflation rate in Taiwan rose to 1.75 percent in July of 2018 from 1.31 percent in the previous month and above market expectations of 1.5 percent. It was the highest inflation rate since April, as prices rebounded for food (0.89 percent vs -0.12 percent in June) and clothing (0.26 percent vs -0.42 percent). Additionally, cost increased faster for housing (0.93 percent vs 0.92 percent); transportation & communication (4.36 percent vs 2.77 percent) and health (1.13 percent vs 0.76 percent). On the other hand, prices eased for education & entertainment (0.43 percent vs 0.49 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (6.38 percent vs 6.90 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy went up to 1.50 percent from 1.30 percent in June. On a monthly basis, consumer prices advanced 0.27 percent, after a 0.28 percent gain in the prior month.

Wholesale prices in Taiwan increased 7.02 percent year-on-year in July of 2018, the most since June of 2010, following a 6.65 percent gain in June. Prices rose further for manufacturing products (5.8 percent compared to 5.4 percent in June), namely petroleum & coal (39.3 percent compared to 36.2 percent) and chemical material, other chemical products & pharmaceuticals (14.3 percent compared to 14.0 percent); quarrying & mining (38.9 percent compared to 38.8 percent), mainly quarrying products & other mining products (14.3 percent compared to 13.5 percent). Also, cost of agriculture, forestry, fishing & animal husbandry declined less (-1.8 percent compared to -1.9 percent), mostly farm products (-5.7 percent compared to -7.6 percent). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices advanced 0.9 percent, after rising 0.8 percent in the previous month.

The central bank of Taiwan left its benchmark discount rate steady at 1.375 percent on June 21st 2018, in line with market expectations. Policymakers said a continued accommodative monetary policy will help ensure price stability and foster solid economic and financial development. The growth momentum in exports is helping to keep the economy on a solid growth path, even amid pressure from global trade tensions. Taiwan's economy is seen advancing at an annual rate of 2.68 percent in 2018, above the previous 2.58 percent projection. Inflation is forecasted at 1.21 percent, slightly below 1.27 percent in the March projection.

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI declined to 53.1 in July of 2018 from 54.5 in the previous month. It was the weakest expansion in factory activity since September 2016, as both output and new orders expanded at softer rates. Reports of low stock levels at vendors led to a further sharp deterioration in average lead times for inputs, while purchasing costs continued to rise at a historically marked clip. Meantime, employment rose slightly. On the price front, cost pressures remained sharp at the start of the third quarter, input prices increased sharply partially explained by higher raw material costs due to stock shortages. Finally, expectations towards the year ahead dropped to a 22-month low mostly due to concerns over an uncertain global outlook.
