The Taiwanese economy advanced 2.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, slightly higher than a preliminary estimate of 2.56 percent growth and following a downwardly revised 2.79 percent in the previous period. Growth slowed for private consumption (1.95 percent from 2.01 percent in Q4 of 2016), investments (4.1 percent from 5.8 percent) and contracted for government spending (-4.8 percent from 1.3 percent). Net external demand registered a less positive contribution, as exports rose by slower 7.4 percent (from 8 percent) while imports advanced 7.7 percent (from 9.6 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP expanded 0.9 percent, following 0.4 percent growth in the previous period.

The number of unemployed decreased by 13,000 to 432,000 compared to March 2017 while the number of employed persons were up by 110,000 to 11,325,000. Labor force participation rate was at 58.70 percent, up 0.07 percentage points from a month earlier. Youth unemployment decreased to 11.62 percent in April from 12.01 percent in March. Total labour force was 11,757,000, nearly unchanged from the previous month. On an unadjusted basis, unemployment rate fell to 3.67 percent from 3.86 percent in the same month a year earlier.

Taiwan Interest Rate at 1.38 percent  
The central bank of Taiwan held its benchmark interest rate steady at 1.375 percent on March 23rd 2017, in line with market expectations. Policymakers said the decision took into account elevated uncertainties over US and European economic policies, a gradual domestic economic recovery, and the fact that actual output is still lower than potential output. Meanwhile, current inflationary pressures and future inflation expectations are both mild, whereas a stronger NT dollar has put domestic financial conditions under strains. The economy is expected to advance 1.92 percent in 2017, up from 1.5 percent in 2016 and the highest in three years, according to forecasts from the statistical office. Inflation is seen at 1.25 percent.
