It was the lowest producer inflation rate since April, as cost of agriculture, forestry, fishing & animal husbandry fell (-3.8 percent compared to 0.5 percent in October). Additionally, prices eased for water, electricity & gas supply (3.3 percent compared to 3.9 percent) and manufacturing products (2.4 percent compared to 4.3 percent), namely chemical material, other chemical products & pharmaceuticals (3.1 percent compared to 9.3 percent). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices declined 2.0 percent, after rising 0.2 percent in the prior month.

Taiwan Inflation Rate at 0.31 percent  
The annual inflation rate in Taiwan fell to 0.31 percent in November 2018 from 1.17 percen in October and below market expectations of 0.9 percent. It was the lowest inflation rate since October last year, as cost dropped for food (-0.5 percent from 1.5 percent in October), namely vegetables (-22.6 percent); clothing (-1.1 percent from 1.7 percent) and education & entertainment (-0.1 percent from 0.1 percent). Also, prices slowed for housing (0.7 percent from 0.9 percent); transportation & communication (0.7 percent from 2.5 percent); and miscellaneous goods & services (1.9 percent from 2.9 percent); Meantime, inflation was steady for health (at 0.9 percent, the same as in October). Annual core inflation, which excludes fruits, vegetables and energy was at 0.7 percent, the same as in the prior month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.6 percent, after rising 0.1 percent in October.

The Nikkei Taiwan Manufacturing PMI dropped to 48.4 in November 2018 from 48.7 in a month earlier. It marked the second straight month of contraction in manufacturing activity and the steepest since October 2015. New orders fell for the third consecutive month and the most since September 2015. Also, new export sales declined at a similarly solid pace to that seen in October, and output continued to contract, with the rate of drop being only slightly softer than October’s 37- month record. Also, buying activity decreased the most in 38 months. Meanwhile, employment grew only slightly for the third straight month, while backlogs fell for the first time in since May 2017. Inflationary pressures meantime softened, with firms noting slower increases in both input costs and selling prices. Companies showed renewed optimism towards the year-ahead outlook but the level of confidence was relatively modest overall.

Taiwan GDP Annual Growth Rate at 2.27 percent  
The Taiwanese economy grew 2.27 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, advancing from a 3.29 percent expansion in the previous period and slightly below the preliminary reading of 2.28 percent. It was the slowest expansion since the third quarter of 2016. The contribution from net export declined as imports jumped 4.64 percent (from 4.53 percent in Q2) and exports grew 1.21 percent, well below a 6.03 percent gain in the prior period. Additionally, private consumption increased by 1.80 percent in Q3, easing from 2.29 percent; and government spending dropped 1.50 percent, following a 5.87 percent increase in Q2. Contrarily, gross capital formation increased 5.40 percent, after showing nearly no growth in the previous quarter. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the economy advanced 0.71 percent on quarter, below 0.80 percent in the preceding period.
