The Nikkei Manufacturing PMI in Taiwan jumped to 56.3 in November of 2017 from 53.6 in October. The reading pointed to the strongest growth in manufacturing activity since April 2011, as new export orders grew the most since August 2014, new export orders expanded at the fastest pace in more than three years and output growth accelerated. Wholesale prices in Taiwan went up 1.57 percent year-on-year in November of 2017, following a 1.58 percent gain in October. It was the fourth straight month increase in wholesale prices but weakest since August. Cost rose the most for quarrying products and other mineral products (22.15 percent in October); tobacco (21.30 percent); petroleum and coal products (15.60 percent), and basic metals (11.66 percent). Meanwhile, the biggest fell was recorded for farm product (-22.59 percent); non-metallic mineral products (-5.33 percent), and machinery and equipment (-3.56 percent). On a monthly basis, the WPI increased 0.48 percent.

Prices rose at a faster pace for : housing (1.33 percent compared to 1.30 percent in October); transport (2.44 percent compared to 1.06 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (4.97 percent compared to 3.79 percent), and education and entertainment (0.33 percent compared to 0.12 percent) while prices of clothing rebounded (0.13 percent compared to -0.21 percent). In contrast prices fell for food (-2.68 percent compared to -3.86 percent), led by vegetables, fruits, and eggs. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.24 percent.

Taiwan GDP Annual Growth Rate at 3.10 percent  
The Taiwanese economy expanded 3.10 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2017, compared to an upwardly revised 2.28 percent growth in the previous period, and slightly below preliminary estimates of 3.11 percent, final figures showed. It was the strongest growth since the first quarter of 2015. On the demand side, private consumption rose faster (2.69 percent compared to 2.05 percent in Q2). Meanwhile, government spending increased slightly less (0.83 percent compared to 0.84 percent in Q2) while gross fixed capital formation fell 3.65 percent (0.80 percent in Q2). Meantime, net trade positively contributed to growth, as exports went up 11.70 percent (from 5.08 percent in Q2) while imports advanced at a softer 6.94 percent (from 5.01 percent). The GDP is predicted to grow 2.58% and 2.29% in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Industrial production in Taiwan increased 2.85% year-on-year in October of 2017, slower than a downwardly revised 4.77% rise in September. It was the weakest growth in industrial production since July, as output expanded slower for manufacturing (3.10% compared to 4.80% in September), mainly boosted by chemical materials (2.52% compared to 4.35%); machinery & equipment (15.46% compared to 22.60%); chemical products (7.131% compared to 11.21%); electrical equipment (3.53% compared to 14.60%), and machinery and equipment (15.46% compared to 22.60%). Also, production slowed for both water supply (0.13% compared to 0.87%) and building construction (4.87% compared to 18.68%).In contrast, output fell for both mining & quarrying (-0.32% compared to 20.86%) and electricity & gas supply (-3.41% compared to -2.20%). On a monthly basis, industrial output rose 0.15%. For the January-to-October period, industrial production advanced 3.28% over a year earlier.

Retail sales in Taiwan increased 3.21 percent year-on-year in Oktober of 2017, following an upwardly revised 3.37 percent rise in September. It was the slowest growth in retail sales since July, as sales advanced at a softer pace for household supplies (0.25 percent compared to 1.85 percent); fuels (2.81 percent compared to 11.42 percent ); food beverages and tobacco (5.45 percent compared to 7.56 percent), and educational and entertainment articles (1.24 percent compared to 1.58 percent). On the other hand, sales went up at a faster pace for pharmaceuticals and medical goods (5.60 percent compared to 2.80 compared) while sales of fabrics and clothes recovered (5.32 percent compared to -1.18 percent). Meantime, sales fell for both communication (-5.54 percent compared to 6.86 percent) and automobiles and motorcycles (-0.24 percent compared to 0.31 percent in September). On a monthly basis, retail trade went up 7.77 percent.
