The current account surplus in Taiwan increased by 4.27 billion to USD 20.51 billion in the third quarter of 2017 from a USD 16.24 billion surplus a year earlier. The goods surplus rose by USD 5.89 billion to USD 22.90 billion, underpinned by a global economic pickup and strong demand for semiconductors. Also, the services deficit narrowed by USD 0.12 billion to USD 3.65 billion, due to higher proceeds from freight services. Meanwhile, the primary income account surplus decreased by USD 1.38 billion to USD 2.53 billion, mainly owing to increased payments for non-residents' equity dividend income. The secondary income deficit widened by USD 0.35 billion to USD 1.27 billion, mainly due to an increase in gift transfers to non-residents.
