Swedish Economic Activity Eases in April

The Swedish economy advanced 0.5% month-on-month in April 2026, following a downwardly revised 1.5% expansion in the previous month, marking the second consecutive month of GDP growth.

“The Swedish economy saw continued growth in April, although at a somewhat more modest pace compared to the strong figures we saw in March.

Growth was relatively broad-based, with increases in production in general government as well as across both goods- and service-producing industries, with particularly high growth rates seen in industrial production,” said Mattias Kain Wyatt, economist at Statistics Sweden.

On a yearly basis, the economy grew 2.4% in April, easing from an upwardly revised 2.8% expansion in March.

Swedish Economic Activity Posts Strongest Growth Since 2023
The Swedish economy expanded 1.9% month-on-month in March 2026, rebounding from a revised 0.6% contraction in the previous month. It marked the first expansion in four months and the strongest growth since July 2023. “Activity in the Swedish economy increased in March following contractions in January and February, bringing it back to levels similar to the end of last year,” said Neda Shahbazi, an economist at Statistics Sweden. On a yearly basis, the economy grew 2.5% in March, accelerating from a downwardly revised 1.3% expansion in February and marking the fastest pace in four months.

Swedish Economic Activity Unchanged in February
The Swedish economy stalled month-on-month in February 2026, mainly due to falling demand from abroad. The latest reading came after a downwardly revised 1.0% contraction in January, which was the steepest decline since February 2025. “Economic activity remained largely unchanged in March compared with February, with limited changes in several major aggregates,” said Asuman Erenel, economist at Statistics Sweden. On a yearly basis, the economy expanded 1.6% in February, accelerating from a downwardly revised 0.4% growth in January.
