Sweden Trade Surplus Shrinks in June

Sweden posted a trade surplus of SEK 2.6 billion in June 2026, more than four times lower than the SEK 11.8 billion recorded in the same month a year earlier, as imports rose faster than exports.

Imports climbed by 18.1% year-on-year to an all-time high of SEK 195.3 billion, driven by higher purchases from both EU markets (21% to SEK 131.8 billion) and non-EU countries (12.6% to SEK 63.5 billion).

Meanwhile, exports grew at a slower pace of 11.7%, but also to a record of SEK 197.6 billion, reflecting increased shipments to both EU countries (18.2% to SEK 112.2 billion) and non-EU countries (4.3% to SEK 85.7 billion).

Considering the first six months of the year, the country’s trade surplus narrowed sharply to SEK 8.2 billion from SEK 47.9 billion in the corresponding period a year ago, as exports rose 3%, while imports increased by a faster 7%.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade net recorded a deficit of SEK 0.5 billion in June.

Sweden recorded a trade surplus of SEK 2.9 billion in May 2026, swinging from a deficit of SEK 0.1 billion in the same month last year, as exports rose faster than imports. Exports climbed 9% year-on-year to SEK 180.8 billion, driven by higher shipments to both EU countries (11.8% to SEK 103.2 billion) and non-EU countries (5.4% to SEK 77.6 billion). Meanwhile, imports increased at a slower pace of 7.2% to SEK 177.9 billion, reflecting higher purchases from both EU markets (5.6% to SEK 119.8 billion) and non-EU countries (10.5% to SEK 58.1 billion). In the January–May period, the trade surplus narrowed to SEK 7.5 billion from SEK 36.1 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier, as exports rose 1% while imports increased by a faster 5%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade surplus edged up to SEK 0.7 billion in May from SEK 0.6 billion in April.

Sweden recorded a trade deficit of SEK 7.3 billion in April 2026, shifting from a surplus of SEK 5.3 billion in the corresponding month a year earlier, as import growth far outpaced export growth. Imports surged 16.0% year-on-year to a record SEK 190.8 billion due to notable increases in purchases from both EU countries (12.5% to SEK 127.9 billion) and non-EU markets (23.8% to SEK 62.9 billion). Exports grew 8.1% to SEK 183.5 billion, driven by higher sales to both the EU (10% to SEK 100.5 billion) and non-EU countries (5.9% to SEK 83.0 billion). In the January–April period, the trade surplus narrowed sharply to SEK 5.7 billion from SEK 36.2 billion in the same period last year. On a seasonally adjusted basis, net trade showed a deficit of SEK 2.9 billion in April, widening from a revised SEK 1.4 billion in March.
