Malaysia Current Account Surplus Widens in Q3

Malaysia's current account surplus widened sharply to MYR 12.2 billion in the third quarter of 2025 from MYR 1.8 billion in the same period last year, as the goods account surplus rose to MYR 33.3 billion from MYR 22.4 billion in the third quarter 2024.

At the same time, the services account recorded a surplus of MYR 0.7 billion, shifting from a MYR 0.8 billion deficit, supported by a jump in surplus of the construction sector, gains in travel, and smaller deficits in insurance and pension services and other business services.

The secondary income deficit also narrowed to MYR 1.8 billion in the third quarter of 2025 from MYR 2.4 billion a year earlier.

In contrast, the primary income account gap widened to MYR 19.9 billion compared to the MYR 17.4 billion recorded in the same period last year.

Malaysia's current account surplus widened to MYR 15.16 billion in the first quarter of 2026 from MYR 13.85 billion in the same period last year. It was the largest current account surplus since Q4 2022, supported by a solid performance in the goods account and sustained improvement in the services account. The goods account surplus increased to MYR 33.60 billion from MYR 32.86 billion in the first quarter of 2025. At the same time, the services account registered a surplus of MYR 6.45 billion, swinging from a MYR 2.19 billion deficit, supported by a surge in the manufacturing services surplus, travel services, and maintenance & repair services. Meanwhile, the primary income account deficit widened to MYR 20.87 billion from MYR 15.38 billion in the same period last year. At the same time, the secondary income deficit increased to MYR 4.02 billion in the first quarter of 2026 from MYR 1.45 billion a year earlier.

Malaysia's current account surplus narrowed sharply to MYR 2.0 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 from MYR 12.9 billion in the same period last year, as the goods account surplus fell to MYR 23.6 billion from MYR 36.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. At the same time, the services account recorded a surplus of MYR 5.0 billion, shifting from a MYR 1.0 billion deficit, supported by a jump in the construction sector surplus, gains in insurance and pension services, and other business services, which swung from a deficit in Q4 2024. Additionally, the primary income account gap widened to MYR 23.5 billion compared to MYR 17.1 billion recorded in the same period last year. Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit dropped to MYR 3.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 from MYR 5.9 billion a year earlier.
