New car sales in Indonesia surged 32.4% year-on-year to a six-month high of 81,756 units in August 2026, following a 33.3% jump in July and marking the fifth consecutive month of expansion, according to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO).
The sharp increase came amid the GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026, held from July 29 to August 9, which contributed to sales in July and August.
For the first eight months of the year, sales increased 20.1% from the same period a year earlier to 594,984 units, highlighting resilient consumer demand despite inflationary pressures and higher non-subsidized fuel prices.
Gaikindo previously targeted domestic new car sales to reach 850,000 units in 2026.
That figure represents a 5.8% increase from the 2025 total of 803,687 units.
Meanwhile, retail new car sales grew 25.6% from a year earlier to 83,422 units in July.
On a monthly basis, car sales edged up 0.8%
