India's BSE Sensex closed about 0.6% down at 83,314 on Thursday, following moderate gains earlier in the week, mainly due to profit booking.
This also reflected caution amid the ongoing mixed earnings season and the recent global rout in tech stocks, partly offset by India-US trade optimism.
Minister Piyush Goyal said the first phase of the India-US bilateral trade agreement is almost ready.
A joint statement is expected to be signed within four to five days, followed by a formal agreement by mid-March.
Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Bharat Electronics ,ITC, ICICI Bank, Reliance and Infosys were among the top losers, falling up to 2.5%.
In contrast, Trent, Tata Steel, State Bank of India and Bajaj Finance bucked the broader trend, gaining as much as 3%.
