The South African rand traded around 16.5 per USD, its highest level since 2022, extending a positive trend that began in April.
The rand has risen more than 11% against the US dollar in 2025, supported by a powerful rally in precious metals and improving domestic economic fundamentals, including continued economic reform efforts and a more favorable inflation outlook.
These factors, together with stronger fiscal management, credible monetary policy, political stability, and ongoing improvements in power supply and increased infrastructure investment, have bolstered investor sentiment.
The rand has also benefited from a more supportive global environment, with the US Federal Reserve’s recent 25-basis-point rate cut contributing to a softer dollar and easing pressure on emerging-market currencies.
