The National Bank of Ethiopia has raised its benchmark interest rate by 200bps to 7 percent and has devalued the Ethiopian birr by 15 percent on October 10th, 2017, in an attempt to reduce inflationary pressures and to boost exports. The devaluation pegs the Ethiopian Birr at 26.91 per US dollar, up from 23.40 on the official market and it will be effective from tomorrow, October 11th, 2017. The country's annual inflation rate hit 10.8 percent in September, its highest level in almost two years. Interest Rate in Ethiopia averaged 5.08 percent from 1995 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 11 percent in December of 1995 and a record low of 3 percent in April of 2002.
