UK natural gas futures fell to 72 pence per therm in early December, a new low since July 2024, tracking a drop in European prices and improving sentiment around peace talks in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Prices have been pressured by US-led ceasefire discussions between Ukraine and Russia, raising hopes of an end to the three-year war and the possibility of eased sanctions on Russian energy.
In addition, weather forecasts for Northwest Europe indicate temperatures near normal this week and markedly milder conditions next week, according to LSEG data.
Mild weather, high wind output, and increased LNG and Norwegian pipeline deliveries have reduced domestic demand.
With limited storage, the UK has been exporting surplus gas to Europe, with flows to Belgium recently hitting a one-year high.
