Soybeans Near 5-Week Low

2026-10-02 02:09 By Joshua Ferrer 1 min. read

Soybean futures fell to around $12.7 per bushel, nearing a five-week low as harvest pressure from an expected record-large US crop weighed on prices.

A wet late summer and early autumn slowed the harvest pace, but the arrival of new supplies continued to pressure the market.

The harvest was 17% complete as of September 27, matching the five-year average, with the crop rated 58% good or excellent.

Expectations of a weaker August soybean crush added pressure, with processors crushing 209.6 million bushels, below the average trade estimate.

Weak Chinese demand also weighed on prices as soybeans were excluded from China’s latest US agricultural tariff cuts and remain subject to an additional 10% tariff.

Chinese crushers have covered much of their needs through early 2027 with South American supplies, while high inventories and weak margins limit fresh purchases.

Still, US export demand remains firm, with weekly sales at 1.03 million tonnes for 2026/27, including 589,400 tonnes to China.

Soybeans Hover at 1-Month Low
Soybean futures traded below $13 per bushel, near four-week lows as disappointment over the latest US-China trade agreement weighed on demand prospects. China agreed to reduce tariffs on a range of US agricultural products, including corn, wheat, soyoil and soymeal, but US soybeans were excluded, leaving them subject to an additional 10% tariff, which continues to discourage Chinese buyers. Chinese state-owned buyers have purchased more than 12 million tonnes of US soybeans, nearly half of the 25 million tonnes the White House said Beijing committed to buying annually through 2028, but no new purchase commitments were announced and the trade truce was extended only through January 10. Meanwhile, the USDA reported harvest at 17% complete as of September 27, matching the five-year average, while export inspections rose to 1.15 million tons in the latest week from 769,698 tons previously. The crop was also rated 58% good-to-excellent, unchanged from the prior week.
