Silver jumped more than 4% to $59 an ounce on Tuesday as investors monitored diplomatic efforts to ease the US-Iran conflict and assessed the implications for oil prices, inflation, and the Federal Reserve’s policy path.

Reports suggested mediators are working to restart negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with a possible 10-day truce being discussed to help secure shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent escalation pushed oil prices to a more than one-month high, intensifying concerns over renewed inflationary pressures.

Some US policymakers have argued that rates may need to stay elevated for longer, or even rise further, to contain inflation.

While the Fed is expected to hold rates steady next week, markets are pricing in more than a 60% chance of a rate hike in September.

Markets now see a nearly 17% chance of an October hike and more than an 85% probability of a December increase, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions offered some support to safe-haven demand, with the number of vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz falling to its lowest level in more than two months as fighting in the region intensified, according to shipping data.

Silver Languishes Near 2-Month Low
Silver weakened below $60 an ounce on Thursday, remaining close to its lowest level since early August as the latest FOMC minutes pointed to the possibility of another US rate hike this year, while elevated oil prices continued to fuel inflation concerns. Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting showed that all 19 policymakers supported the September rate increase, with most indicating that another hike would likely be appropriate before year-end. Markets broadly expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged this month, while the probability of a December hike currently stands at around 78%. Meanwhile, oil prices advanced following reports that the Trump administration had asked the Pentagon to prepare strike options against Iran that could be carried out before the midterm elections. Risks to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz also remain elevated, even as oil flows from the Middle East are estimated to have recovered to prewar levels.

Silver Drops to Two-Month Low Ahead of Fed Minutes
Silver prices fell more than 3% to around $59 an ounce on Wednesday, touching their lowest level since early August, pressured by a stronger US dollar as investors awaited the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting for clues on policymakers’ appetite for further rate hikes. Following softer US jobs data, markets now largely expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged in October, while still pricing in an over 80% probability of a hike in December, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid said interest rates may still need to rise to bring inflation under control, while San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said the policy decision would depend on whether inflationary pressures prove temporary or persistent.
