Platinum Falls on Hawkish Fed View

Platinum fell to around $1,550 per ounce, hitting a one-week low as traders dialed back expectations for US Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, triggering a pullback in precious metals.

Markets are currently pricing in around a 46% chance the Fed will lower rates by 25 bps in December, down sharply from roughly 88% a month ago.

These developments came as several Fed officials expressed skepticism over the need for a rate cut next month, with some opposing it entirely.

Investors are now looking ahead to the closely watched US jobs report for September, due Thursday, while awaiting an updated schedule of economic data releases.

Platinum has surged over 70% year-to-date, outperforming gold, supported by tight supply and strong industrial demand.

Elsewhere, China approved registration for platinum and palladium futures and options, marking a key step toward launching derivatives trading for metals used by automakers and other industries.

Platinum Trades Near 7-Month Lows
Platinum futures traded around $1,600 an ounce, hovering near their lowest level since November 2025 as precious metals broadly weakened after renewed clashes in the Middle East reignited inflation concerns. Although the US and Iran agreed to pause further attacks after recent exchange of strikes around the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices climbed as the latest escalation disrupted the recovery in oil shipments through the key waterway that had followed an earlier interim deal. The US dollar also remained broadly stronger, making dollar-denominated commodities such as platinum more expensive for buyers of other currencies. Markets continue to anticipate that the Federal Reserve will raise rates this year after a hawkish tone from new Chair Kevin Warsh and upward revisions to inflation forecasts. Meanwhile, the platinum market remains structurally tight as output from major producers South Africa and Russia remains constrained by aging mines, high costs, and sanctions-related disruptions.
