US egg prices fell below $0.99 per dozen, sliding to their lowest levels since May 2023 after a brief avian flu–related rebound faded amid quicker-than-expected recovery in layer numbers, rising inventories, and modest demand growth.
USDA and industry data show inventories climbing to annual highs as egg production rebounded following the peak of HPAI disruptions, increasing availability across the supply chain even as export demand and foodservice activity remained subdued.
Physical buying has also softened, with retail demand and cross-border shipments failing to absorb the surplus, forcing processors and brokers to clear excess supply in thin year-end markets and accelerating the decline.
Earlier policy and industry measures that supported flock restocking and strengthened biosecurity, including USDA mitigation and indemnity programs, have further sped up the rebuilding of laying flocks, reinforcing the persistent supply overhang.
