US egg prices rose to $2.2 per dozen, rebounding from May 2023 lows of $1.06 seen in October and approaching August highs as supply tightened just as demand firmed ahead of the holiday baking and foodservice season.
Renewed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in October struck multiple commercial flocks and prompted depopulation and movement restrictions in some producing regions, directly removing laying hens from the national supply pipeline.
At the same time the national flock has been rebuilding only gradually and monthly output remains below precrisis levels, meaning even modest additional losses translate into larger percentage falls in weekly shell egg availability.
Warehouse and retail channels reacted quickly to the tighter flows, with distributors drawing down breaking stock and retailers restocking cartoned eggs.
