Baltic Dry Index Down for 3rd Day

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, decreased for a third straight session on Tuesday, dropping about 2.8% to a fresh low since September 1 at 3,178 points.

The main downward pressure came from larger vessel segments.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, slipped by 4.6% to its lowest since August 26 at 5,103 points; and the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell 0.5% to 2,390 points.

On the other hand, the supramax index rose by 0.4% to its highest since August 2022 at 1,797 points.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was down for a second session on Monday, dropping about 4.6% to its lowest since September 1 at 3,268 points. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, slipped by 7.5% to 5,351 points, likely influenced by lower iron ore prices due to ample global supply. At the same time, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, fell by 0.2% to 2,402 points, partly due to lower wheat prices. Amogn smaller vessels, the supramax index rose by 0.2% to 1.790 points.

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell about 1.3% to 3,426 points on Friday, following a 1.2% rise in the prior session, pressured by the bigger-size segment. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes, including iron ore and coal, slumped by 2.6% to 5,784 points. On the other hand, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, rose by 1.1% to 2,407 points; and the supramax index went up by 0.2% to 1,786 points. For the week, the benchmark index increased by 1.6%.
