Baltic Dry Index Bounces Back

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose about 0.3% to 3,584 points on Tuesday, following a 1.4% decrease in the prior session.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, rebounded by 0.4% to 6,313 points; and the supramax index went up 0.7% to 1,693 points.

On the other hand, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, was down for a third day, falling 0.7% to 2,414 points.

Baltic Dry Index Breaks 3-Day Advance
The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell by 1.4% to 3,575 points on Monday, snapping a three-day advance but staying near its highest levels since October 2021. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, slumped by 2.2% to 6,286 points, also breaking a three-day wining streak but remaining close to its peak since December 2023. At the same time, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, was down for a second session, falling 0.7% tp 2,431 points. Among smaller vessels, the supramax index went up by 0.4% to 1,682 points.

Baltic Dry Index Rises to Fresh 2021-Highs
The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, extended its upward trend for a third session on Friday, climbing by 4% to a fresh high since October 2021 at 3,628 ponts. Shipping rates have risen sharply as strong demand for commodities, particularly iron ore and coal, meets tight vessel supply and longer routes caused by geopolitical disruptions. The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also advanced for a third day, surging 6.4% to a new peak since December 2023 at 6,427 points. At the same time, the supramax index rose by 0.4% to 1,675 points. Meanwhile, the panamax index, which tracks vessels carrying around 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, halted a recent run of gains and fell 0.4% to 2,448 points. For the week, the benchmark index soared about 13.9%.
