Baltic Dry Index Ends 5-Day Losing Run

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, snapped a five-day losing streak on Wednesday, rising about 0.6% to 1,961 points, propelled by the bigger-size segment.

The capesize index, which typically transports 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also halted a five-day losing run, advancing 2.1% to 2,843 points.

On the other hand, the panamax index, which usually carries 60,000-70,000 tons of coal or grain, was down for a third day, falling 1% to its lowest since October 21 at 1,885 points.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index eased 8 points to 1,342 points.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was down for a second session on Tuesday, falling 1.1% to a near three-week low of 1,995 points. The capesize index, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also retreated for a second day, slumping 1.9% to a near one-week low of 2,947 points; and the supramax index eased 1 point, or 0.1%, to 1,202 points. Conversely, the panamax index, which usually carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, edged up 0.1% to 1,744 points. The benchmark index recorded a 12.2% decline in March, its first month of losses this year.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index eased 3 points, or 0.3%, to 1,203 points.

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index, which monitors rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, was up for a third session on Friday, rising about 0.8% to 2,031 points. The capesize index, which typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, also advanced for a third day, climbing 2% to its highest since March 4at 3,032 points. At the same time, the supramax index added 1 point to 1,206 points; while the panamax index, which usually carry 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, continued to decrease, falling about 0.8% to a fresh six-week low of 1,756 points. For the week, the benchmark index declined about 1.2%.
