Colombia Economic Activity Rises to 10-Month High

Colombia's leading economic index rose 4.1% year-on-year in May 2026, accelerating from 3.3% in April and marking the strongest growth in ten months.

Primary activities, including agriculture, fishing, mining, and quarrying, rose 0.7% after contracting 2.6% in the previous month.

Growth in tertiary activities also strengthened, accelerating to 5.4% from 4.5%, supported by utilities (5.8% vs. 4.7%), information and communication (1.6% vs. 0.9%), professional and scientific activities (2.4% vs. 1.1%), and public administration and defense (10.5% vs. 8.0%).

Meanwhile, growth in secondary activities, including manufacturing and construction, eased to 0.5% from 1.5%.

On a monthly basis, economic activity increased 0.72%, up from 0.34% in April.

Colombia’s leading economic index rose 3.3% year-on-year in April 2026, easing from a 4% increase in March. Tertiary activities grew 4.6%, slowing from 5.3% in the previous month. Within the sector, the strongest gains came from public administration and services, up 8.1% after 6.6% in March, and utilities supply, which rose 4.7% after 4.0%. Other categories, including professional, scientific, technical, administrative, and support activities (1.2% vs 3.4%) and information and communication (1.5% vs 3.4%), expanded at a slower pace. Secondary activities increased 1.8%, down from 3% in March. Meanwhile, primary activities contracted 2.4% after a 1.7% expansion in the previous month. On a month-over-month basis, economic activity rose 0.34%, following a 0.42% increase in March.

Colombia's leading economic index rose 3.98% year-on-year in March 2026, accelerating from a 1.65% gain in February. Tertiary activities rose 5.26% from 3.15%, supported by gains in financial and insurance activities (7.2% versus 1.5%), utilities supply (4% versus 1.2%) and information and communications (3% versus -0.1%). Secondary activities expanded 3.17% after a 0.26% contraction, as manufacturing grew (4.5% versus 2.9%) and returned to growth for construction (1.2% versus -7.4%). Meanwhile, primary activities recovered by 1.94% from a 2.74% decline, reflecting stronger activity in agriculture (2% versus -3%) and mining and quarrying (1.4% versus -1.4%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, economic activity rose by 0.42%, following a 0.31% rise.
