Spain Retail Sales Growth Slows in April

Retail trade in Spain went up by 0.8% year-on-year in April 2026, following a 4.1% surge in the prior month, partly reflecting a base effect from a strong comparison period a year earlier.

Sales growth slowed sharply for non-food products (2.6% vs 6.7% in March), particularly personal equipment (0.7% vs 4.5%); household equipment (3.3% vs 7.7%) and healthcare products (2.3% vs 6.1%).

Spending on food also moderated (1.5% vs 2.7%).

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade fell by 1.5% in April, reversing a 1.2% increase in the previous month.

Spain Retail Trade Growth Hits 4-Month High
Retail trade in Spain rose by 4.1% year-on-year in March 2026, the most in four months, following an upwardly revised 2.3% increase in the prior month. Growth was led by non-food sales (7% vs 3.5% in February), especially household equipment (7.6% vs 1.6%) and healthcare items (6.1% vs 1.8%), while personal equipment sales rose more moderately (4.5% vs 6.6%). Food sales also picked up, rising 2.8% compared with 1.8% in the previous month. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade went up by 1.2%, the strongest increase since February 2025, after a revised flat reading in the previous month.

Retail trade in Spain rose by 2.2% year-on-year in February 2026, following a downwardly revised 3.8% advance in January and missing analysts' forecasts of 3.8%. This marked the slowest increase in retail activity since November 2024, as sales growth moderated for both food (1.7% vs 2.6% in January) and non-food products (3.3% vs 5.3%), of which household equipment (1.6% vs 2.1%) and healthcare products (1.5% vs 2.3%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade edged down by 0.1%, following a revised flat reading in the previous month.
